MANCORAD
March, 2006, Mancorad Meeting Minutes
President Fred (W6BSF) called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. on March 8, 2006. Dick (N9QFY) gave the Treasurer’s report, which was accepted by motion from John (NZ9Z) and second by Dan (N9FVZ). The February, 2006, meeting minutes as e-mail distributed by Fred were accepted by motion from Walt (K9WL) and second by Bob (KC9HBA).
Fred invited all in attendance to acknowledge new member Dick (KB9KEM); welcome Dick.
Dick (N9QFY) reported on an upcoming highway department meeting on roadside cleanup that he is planning on attending. Fred asked the membership present if Highway 42 cleanup in the section around Tapawingo Road assigned to Mancorad is something Mancorad should continue to support as a Club project. By show of hands, the membership present indicated that Mancorad should continue support.
Mancorad will conduct a one day Technician Licensing class on 4/1/06 at the Mancorad Clubshack. The course material taught will be HamCram in one ~7 hour session (starts at 8:30 am) followed by a VE Exam. Participants are paying a nominal fee for the course material and the FCC VE Exam fee. Approximately 15 persons are presently signed up. Mancorad will pick up lunches and give a free 1-year club membership to all who pass the Exam.
Dick gave an update on the Mancorad Silent Key plaque. A list of known SK’s is on the Mancorad website; please review and give any updates to Dick. The website address is; http://www.qsl.net/w9dk/ .
A signup sheet was routed for the Mancorad Cobia submarine operating event on 4/29-30/06. It was suggested that Mancorad members not participating in the overnight monitor the 146.610 repeater into the night to allow contacts to be made with the Boy Scouts staying on the submarine Saturday night.
Fred gave an update on the progress of radio station W9LTC at the Lakeshore Technical College training building. 5/3 (new date!!) is the expected ribbon cutting for the building’s expansion; W9LTC will be manned and operated to the extent possible depending on antenna and grounding installation progress, which are waiting for better weather conditions.
Dan (N9NCU) gave an ARES/RACES update:
1) The long overdue update to the ARES/RACES member plan is completed; the new plan is being distributed to all members. 2) The 1st quarterly meeting was conducted on Monday, 2/27, at the Red Cross Headquarters. Turnout was disappointingly light. A self-study guide has been sent to all who did not attend for the newly revised Statement of Understanding with the Red Cross, and specific details on Red Cross message handling. It is important for those who missed the meeting to complete the self study guide because at present, only 6 of the 21 ARES/RACES members are qualified to respond to a Red Cross activation. 3) If you have not had weather spotter training provided by the National Weather Service in two or more years, please consider attending the upcoming Green Bay NWS spotter training to be given on 4/17/06 at the Manitowoc County Office Building on Expo Drive. The training is open to the public and starts at 6:30 pm. 4) Three (3) desktop PC’s are/will be coming out of service as part of the communications upgrade grant. These are free for the taking. The PC removed from the EOC is presently in the Clubshack for anyone who wants it. It has a Pentium 133 processor and is complete with monitor. This PC will be sent to recycling end of March if nobody takes it.
AES Superfest dates for 2006 are 3/31 and 4/1. Contact Fred if you are interested in car-pooling to Milwaukee for the Saturday date.
Sunday, 3/12/06, is the Wisconsin QSO Party. If you participate, you can submit your log to Fred to be consolidated with other Mancorad logs for a single club submittal. Chris (KB9VLS) may be opening up the Clubshack for the event; contact Chris if you would like to operate from W9DK.
If you return your spent inkjet cartridge to OfficeMax, you can get a ream of paper in return, which can be donated to Mancorad.
December’s Salvation Army bell ringing brought in $240.00 in the name of Mancorad; thanks to those who participated.
A proposal had been sent to the Board of Directors for a modified dues structure; the BOD has accepted the proposal, and Fred forwarded it to the membership by e-mail on 2/26/06 for membership voting at this meeting. The proposal, in simplification, retains normal dues at $20.00 / year. Senior members (> years of age) dues are reduced to $10.00; family and student dues remain unchanged. However, the $20.00 annual member dues can be made voluntary if a member does either of the following: 1) Serve as a Board Member and attend a majority of Board meetings unless excused, or 2) Coordinates two (2) Mancorad scheduled events during the year. The proposal will be added to the hardcopy of these minutes for the minutes file. There were 22 members in good standing at this meeting; by vote, they unanimously accepted this proposal. This will affect 2007 dues.
Also, a By-Laws change had been sent to the Board of Directors to add a definition for Honorary Life Membership to Mancorad; the Board has accepted this change and forwarded it to the membership for voting at this meeting. It was sent to the membership with the same email mentioned in the previous item. The change will be added to the hardcopy of these minutes for the minutes file. There were 22 members in good standing at this meeting; by vote, they unanimously accepted this By-Laws change.
Fred showed the group two “mini- manuals” for his amateur radio equipment that he purchased from an organization with a website address of www.niftyaccessories.com . They are nicely bound and have laminated pages.
Because of the late hour after this busy meeting’s business had been conducted, the membership preferred to view part 2 of the video on “Contesting” at the April meeting; part 1 was viewed at the February meeting.
The monthly 50/50 raffle was conducted. $20.50 was collected, and the winner of the drawing was Bob (KC9HBA). The treasury will increase by $10.25 from this raffle.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 p.m.
Lunch was served; thanks again to Theresa and Gene for bringing in the treats!!! Fellowship and socializing broke out spontaneously.
Respectfully submitted,
Dan (N9NCU) Secretary
