MANCORAD

 June, 2005 Meeting Minutes

President Fred (W6BSF) called the meeting to order at 1933 CDT, June 8, 2005. The May, 2005 meeting minutes as e-mail distributed by Fred were accepted by motion from Dan (N9FVZ) and second by Gene (WB9DQD). Dick (N9QFY) gave the Treasurer’s report which was accepted by motion from Travis (KB9YRC) and second by Gene (KB9KXF).Fred thanked the individuals who helped in the lowering of the Force 12 C3SS HF beam donated by the estate of Dennis (W9DWN, SK), and re-installation at the Mancorad Clubshack in replacement for the TA-33 Jr.; the TA-33Jr. will be used for field day and other club events in the future.  Participants were NZ9Z, KB9YRC, N9FVZ, KA9WYK and W6BSF.

Please sign up for help on the following club events;

  • The Leukemia – Lymphoma Bike-a-thon on July 23 – 24, 2005. We need a new coordinator(s) as N9PBL has indicated he will not be doing it this year.  If a new coordinator does not step forward, the bikers will be without amateur radio communications support after leaving Sheboygan County en-route to Sturgeon Bay .  It was reported that Chris (KB9VLS) has volunteered to be the Saturday coordinator (Chris was not in attendance to verify); a coordinator for Sunday is still being sought. This item will remain open until the July monthly Mancorad meeting after which, if there is no Sunday coordinator volunteer, the event will be canceled for Mancorad support.  This is the largest public service event that the club has been supporting for many years.
  • Field Day on June 25 – 26, 2005 at Silver Creek Park (Toboggan Hill) in Manitowoc .
  • Brat Fry on June 11, 2005, at the Two Rivers Pick’N Save; contact N9FVZ, KB9KXE or N9QFY if you can help.  Current volunteer signups indicate more people are needed for Saturday afternoon.
  • USS Cobia for Ships Afloat on July 16 - 17, 2005.
  • Troutman Bike-a-thon on July 16, 2005; contact KB9GOX if you can help; tentative time commitment is 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

John (NZ9Z) gave an update on the $575.00 raised for donation in ham radio equipment for Sri Lanka after the Tsunami disaster.  A Canadian model Motorola MSR2000 440 MHz repeater (30W) has been purchased through eBay.  New crystals for the selected operating frequency need to be purchased, and the unit “tuned up” prior to sending to Sri Lanka .

June 20, 2005, will be the annual proclamation of Amateur Radio Operation Day for Manitowoc County by the city of Manitowoc ’s Mayor.  If you wish to attend, please be at the Manitowoc City Hall by 1850 CST that evening.

Dan (N9NCU) gave an update on Manitowoc County ARES/RACES activities. Since the May meeting, there have been 4 nets with 52 checkins; 2 Skywarn severe weather net activations; and a tour provided by WB9MFB of the 146.610 repeater to the ARES/RACES leadership team. A change in usage of terminology for fixed emergency radio locations has been adopted to eliminate confusion:  The Manitowoc County EM EOC in the basement of the county jail will now be referred to as the EOC, the Mancorad Clubshack will now be referred to as W9DK, and the Red Cross building on no. 9th street will continue to be referred to as Red Cross.  This applies to verbal and written communications.

Several Sunday morning social nets have failed to be held recently due to lack of an individual to take on being the Net Control Station. No NCS, no net; so, pick up that mike and start things rolling at 10:00 a.m. if everything is quiet!

Starting with this meeting, lunch costs will be covered through a voluntary, honor system donation.  This is being done to avoid tapping the club treasury for this important social portion of monthly meetings.

A general discussion was held about the importance of having members step forward to be activity leaders.  Examples where we are falling short include this year’s Leukemia/Lymphoma bike-a-thon, and no second Brat Fry fund raiser.  With the passing of Dennis Nelson (W9DWN, SK), there is now a vacuum for leadership for the annual lighthouse event.  Please step forward and take a lead on a club event. Events are one-time efforts and do not continue throughout the year.

The third, and final, of three excellent Severe Weather presentations was made by Travis (KB9YRC).  Thanks Travis, from all of the club membership for taking the time to prepare and make these presentations!

The monthly 50/50 raffle was conducted.  $22.00 was collected, and the winner of the drawing was Winston (KC9FVR). The treasury will increase by $11.00 due to tonight’s raffle, and Winston can take his dad out for lunch with his $11.00.

The meeting was adjourned at 2135 CDT.

   Lunch was served.

   Respectfully submitted,

   Dan (N9NCU), Secretary
