November, 2007 Meeting Minutes

PDF Version

The November 14th, 2007 meeting was called to order at 7:32pm (1932 CST) by the President, Carl (KA9WYK). A hardy welcome was extended to those joining us via computer stream and SKYPE - Steve (WB9MCJ), John (NZ9Z), and Mark (W9MV). Thank you for checking in and thank you Marty for making it possible for others to join us at our meeting. The October 2007 meeting minutes as e-mailed & posted on the web site were accepted by motion from Denise (N4WGK) and second by Roger (W9N9X).

Dan (N9NCU) gave the treasury report with a motion to accept from Bob (KC9HBA), second by Vern (KB9EME).

  • ยท Dan (N9NCU) passed around a projected/actual budget showing detailed expenses with the understanding that the numbers will shift once the actual cost for repeater work, cost of HAM CRAM, and monies from additional brat fries, etc. are incorporated.
  • Carl (KA9WYK) mentioned that copies of the membership application form were available at the front table. The forms were e-mailed last Saturday, November 10th, to members and we will mail the form out this week to those members who need a copy. See Dan (N9NCU) for forms. Please submit membership dues by 31 Dec.

Old business:

  • New Coordinator positions
  • Historian - TJ (KC9HYD)
  • Carl (KA9WYK) will contact TJ and discuss where we want to go with this position. It was suggested that TJ likes photography and likes creating web site pages.
  • Educational Coordinator - Steve (K9ZW)
  • Steve, Tim (N7TAL), and John (NZ9Z) will head up the committee. They will run the HAM Cram and other educational functions including VE members. They may consider a basic electronics class if there is enough interest.
  • Technical Resources - Rich (KC9LOA)
  • Rich will chair this committee. Any technical issues will be given to Rich and his committee.

Carl talked with Wayne Frank about the Repeater DTMF Controller. Wayne suggested we should purchase a rack mount. He mentioned that any rack mounted controller will work and that it was just a matter of hooking it up. The price runs between $64.00 - $500.00. This will be given to the Repeater/House committee for a recommendation.

  • Antenna replacement - We contacted the city and they can bring the lift truck in the afternoon. We need 3 people for this. Volunteers are Dan (N9NCU), Chris (KB9VLS), Travis (KB9YRC) and Carl (KA9WYK). Dan will coordinate this operation. Tentatively, the project will take place Friday, November 16, 2007 at 1330 (1:30pm) if the weather cooperates. It will be rescheduled if it is too windy. Thank you Dan for checking out the antennas and Fred for making up the coax ends.
  • The club received two thank you cards; one from Oran Bushman (N9VIA) and one Dawn (KC9JNK). We wish the best for both of you.

New Business:

  • Board meeting minutes.
    • Fred (W6BSF) suggested that the board meeting minutes be published on the web site and e-mailed to members. The decision was made to have the agenda available for inspection by members at the club meetings. The information will be with the Secretary, Roxanne (KC9KQU).
  • Committees: We added a few committees and appointed a Chair for each committee. The Chair will report to the President and updates will be due at the board meetings so they can be read at the meeting. We asked for volunteers to be on the following committees.
    • Field Day - committee will coordinate Field Day activities.
  •  Chair - Rich (KC9LOA), with Walt (K9WL), Vern (KB9EME), Chris (KB9VLS), and Marty   (KC9JGE) *Please have any suggestions or items you want to see/do for Field Day in by 1 Feb 2008.

    • Education Ham Cram, Currently there are 10 people signed up. They had their first meeting on Monday evening, 12 Nov and will have their next one on 19 Nov with the exam scheduled for 1 Dec at the club shack. The cost will be the same as our last Ham Cram, $40.00 which would off set the FCC License Fee, Supplies/Materials, Book and luncheon. Anyone interested should contact Steve (K9ZW) or John (NZ9Z).
    • Ares/Races - Dan (N9NCU) reported success with the Beam antenna on the roof at the Manitowoc/Calumet County Red Cross Chapter. We couldn’t pick up Calumet County ARES/RACES Repeater, so this provides the needed coverage to communication with that area. There is a meeting scheduled with Calumet County ARES scheduled at the Red Cross Office on 8th Street in Manitowoc for 20 Nov at 0930. The 4th quarter meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 27 Nov. With the up coming nuclear exercise, Manitowoc Emergency Management is offering two radiation dosimetry training sessions 28 Nov. Also the Kewaunee exercise is scheduled for 4 Dec, if anyone is interested in participating, contact Dan (N9NCU) or check out the web site for more details. This is a great opportunity to hone your skills and/or try something new.
  • The monthly 50/50 raffle was conducted and $7.50 went to the winner who was a new visitor/member, John (N9GJV). Congratulations John on your winnings and welcome. Treasury increased by $7.50.

A sign up sheet was passed around so members could list their “Presentation ideas/suggestions” and to offer members the opportunity to be Presenters. Thus far, 1.Travis (KB9YRC) has offered to do a SKYWARN presentation at the April meeting and 2.) Implementation of WL2K. (Winlink)

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Gene (KB9KXF) and second by Bob (KC9HBA). A social luncheon followed the meeting. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
