MANCORAD
January 2008 Meeting Minutes
PDF Version
The January 9th, 2008 meeting was called to order at 7:35pm (1935) by the President Carl KA9WYK. Introductions were made by those in attendance at the club shack. There was no one on SKYPE for this meeting, however, there were 10 individuals joining us via UStream.TV which is an audio and video feed. Also, there were 7 (the peak number) users of the Icecast 2 Status, which is streaming audio only. Welcome to all that checked in for the meeting. If you have any questions or comments/suggestions, please forward them to Marty KC9JGE.
The December 2007 meeting minutes as e-mailed and posted on the web site were accepted by motion from Dan N9NCU and second by Travis KB9YRC, the motion carried.
Dan N9NCU gave the treasury report which covered details about the 50/50 raffle, the Christmas party and end of year amounts. Also, membership application forms were available at the front table and members were reminded to please submit membership dues to Dan as soon as possible. Motion to accept the treasury report was made by Bob KC9HBA and second by Tim N7TAL, the motion carried.
Dan ran through the most current calendar dates for 2008 ARES/RACES activities. There are many exciting things coming up this year. These are great opportunities to learn new ways to enjoy and expand your knowledge as a HAM radio operator. Some of the events that you can look forward to include:
- · March 20 - 1st Quarter meeting; Red Cross chapter office and Disaster Service Van
- · May 6 - 2nd Quarter meeting; Digital communications (Winlink 2000, PSK31, etc.) for emergency communications
- · Sept 27 - 3rd Quarter meeting; Message handling, County emergency response vehicle, and annual WI ARES SET (Simulated Emergency Test) preparation
- · Oct 4 - WI Simulated Emergency Test
- · Dec 2 - 4th Quarter meeting; annual nuclear exercise preparation
- · Dec 9,10 - Annual nuclear exercise with Point Beach Power Station
Dan reminded everyone that ARES will sponsor a workshop Saturday, February 16th, from 0900-1100 to construct Anderson Power Pole connectors on member radio(s) and power supply(ies). As noted in the August 2007 minutes, "The purpose for this is a means of quickly changing one radio for another into power supply / battery or for (Cigarette Lighters) use in vehicles. These poles will provide interchangeability for member[']s rigs to club power supplies (should there be a need to use members rigs.) The club will provide the power pole connectors free to interested club members." For those members interested in pursuing this, please contact Dan for more details.
The Christmas party was a success with 37 people attending. This year it was held at Gills Bar and Grill in Whitelaw. The club received two $5.00 certificates along with a card from Gills expressing their appreciation for our patronage and wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season. An open discussion followed regarding our next Christmas party. After, positive comments about this Christmas party and the quality of food offered by Gills, it was suggested that we have our Christmas party again at Gills. Reservations will be made for Friday, January 9th, 2009 with a 6:00pm social hour and a 7:00pm dinner.
There was a suggestion that perhaps a member could volunteer to fix Gill's sound system or make a portable amp system for future use. Some additional suggestions were to have a music group or drama group perform for us next year. This would be a great opportunity to interact with another community organization. Not only will it give us an opportunity to explain what we do, but it gives their organization a chance to make some money. Any comments and/or suggestion should be directed to the Christmas Party Committee - Chair person, Dan (N9NCU), with Bob (KC9HBA) and Jody (KC9KVT).
There is a Field Day committee meeting and a HAM operator get together / open house is scheduled from 10:00 - 12:00, January 19th, 2008 at the club shack. There will be a Norther American QSO Party, SSB: 1800Z , Jan 19 to 0600Z, Jan 20. This is good chance for new operators to gain experience for our up coming Field Day June 28 - 29 and to train on HF, PSK31, and (if we can do it) any other mode members may want to try.
New Business:
Speaking of Field Day, the Chairperson - Rich (KC9LOA) along with Walt (K9WL), Vern (KB9EME), Chris (KB9VLS), and Marty (KC9JGE) would like your comments and suggestions by Feb. 1st. If there are items you want to see or do for this event, please let them know as soon as possible. There is a "family picnic" planned and Carl has offered to bring eggs for breakfast, plus (unofficially) Rich has offered to provide 10 steaks for those members who stick it out and operate all night. We may try for a Satellite contact or a Space Station contact!!! This year Field Day is June 28 and June 29. Mark your calendar for a great time and a chance to get some serious time operating.
The Club received several thank you cards: one from Dan thanking the club for the plant he received while he was in the hospital (nice to have you back Dan!), one from the Beyer Family who appreciated our thoughts and prayers and as mentioned earlier, one from Gills Bar and Grill thanking the club for our patronage.
Carl gave a PowerPoint presentation on a proposed new Web Site. We know that having a Web page that represents our organization is a helpful recruiting tool. Several new members "found" us because it exists. We had roughly 90 members and 25 of them are new. Many thanks to Walt for graciously donating space on his personal site to the club for the past year.
The information that is currently on our Web page (general information, meeting minutes etc.) will still be on the new site, but there are additional benefits such as forms, online sign-up for events, membership "eddress" (Yourcall@w9dk.com <mailto:Yourcall@w9dk.com>), private members only site, club membership directory, weather spotting (would give net control the ability to see spotters), APRS county maps with NOAA radar, Windows mobile devices web page - cell phone usable, and personalized Blog areas. Also, there is the possibility of setting up (hosting) other (up to 8) web sites, for example we could host a page dedicated to the USS COBIA, or ARES/RACES can have their own domain. The Club would own the site and the ManCoRad Board would have full control of the site. The basic business plan will cost $8.95.month for a two year contract.
The proposal was then opened up for discussion. Vern KB9EME thought the new weather spotting abilities would be very helpful. Marty KC9JGE and Tom KC9LNZ addressed concerns of having everything backed-up. Walt K9WL asked for clarification of the cost and benefits. Another comment was made to make sure that our web page and calendar of events was kept current. Information on the new web site may be able to be set with a "self expiring" mode so past event dates will automatically be removed. Marty will check into all of the features thoroughly and will be the Administrative contact and webmaster.
While it is important for the club to move forward, it is also important to maintain the basics of HAM radio operating. The depth of experience and breadth of knowledge within our group offers members the chance to play in many different areas of Amateur radio. If a member is interested in learning Morse code, we have the knowledge; if a member wants to learn about digital, we have the knowlegde. We are very fortunate to have so many fun folks to learn and play with in our community. Thanks to all who share their experiences and knowledge to help each other continue to grow.
A motion was made by Steve K9ZW and second by Tom KC9LNZ to purchase a web site. There was a vote by voice with 21 in favor and 1 nay. The motion carried.
The 50/50 raffle was held and tickets were also drawn for the two $5.00 gift certificates. One of the gift certificates went to Tim N7TAL and Carl KA9WYK won the other certificate. Carl was fortunate enough to have another one of his tickets selected for the 50/50 raffle which had a total of $21.50. Carl elected to donate his winnings back to the club.
Reminders about doing an informational demo for the Parks and Rec department in February. The dates that are being considered are Feb. 1, 15, or 29. If you are interested in helping with this demo please contact Carl. There may be another HAM CRAM in spring, possibly in April and Rich KC9LOA has plans to go for his General class this year. If more members are interested in upgrading to a General class, the club may offer group training. Notify an officer or another member if you are interested.
A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Tim N7TAL and second by Mike KC9HQV. There was a very nice lunch provided after the meeting. Thank you Theresa, KC9KXE for being so thoughtful. The sandwiches, cheese, and brownies were terrific.
