ManCoRad Meeting Minutes
PDF VERSION
August 13th, 2008
The meeting was called to order at 7:32P.M. by President Carl KA9WYK. Introductions were made by those in attendance along with Marty KC9JGE introducing those joining us via UStream. There was an announcement reminder that we have the last of three Brat Fry’s on Saturday, August 30th at the Two Rivers Pick N Save.
After clarification about the July vote to accept new members, Ken K9HAG made a motion to accept the July minutes as posted on our Website. Mary KB9GOY second the motion. By unanimous vote, the motion carried.
► Treasurer’s report: Dan N9NCU gave the Treasurer’s report. See Dan N9NCU for complete details. Thank you Fred W6BSF for purchasing the tools listed (and voted on) at the July meeting. The 24 hour clock still needs to be purchased. Other than that, it looks like we are pretty well set.
There was a discussion regarding the money spent on and who is responsible for the tower base. No one seemed to remember if this was a Club project or an ARES/RACES project. The Club will look at old “To Do Lists” and old minutes to find out more about this project. No determination was made at this time. Gene KB9KXF made a motion to accept the report and it was second by Travis KB9YRC. By unanimous vote, the motion carried.
Recently several members have suffered loses of loved ones. ManCoRad made a $30.00 memorial to the ARRL Foundation Scholarship on behalf of William Zastrow, a long time member, who died last month. A Thank You card was received from the Zastrow family and from Tom Frenaye K1KI of the ARRL Foundation. The Foundation expressed their condolences to the Zastrow family and thanked ManCoRad for the memorial to the Foundation Scholarship. Also, Ellen Zastrow forwarded a $25.00 check to ManCoRad from the Manitowoc Garden Club as a memorial to Bill K9DUX. This donation was also sent to the ARRL Scholarship Foundation in honor of Bill K9DUX.
Sadly, long-time ManCoRad member Ken Tate’s (KB9OBX) son, Ronald Tate, died earlier this month. In lieu of flowers, the family wished for memorials to be made to the charity of donor’s choice. Ken’s family gave special thanks to the staff of Holy Family Memorial Cancer Care and Hospice; Dan N9NCU recommended the group make a donation to Holy Family Memorial Hospice. Ken K9HAG made a motion to accept the proposal. Fred W6BSF second the motion, the motion carried by unanimous vote. The Club will make a $25.00 donation to Holy Family Memorial Hospice in honor of the Tate family.
► Old Business: The club discussed the pros and cons for two of the 501c status categories – 501c3 and 501c7. Both require a $300.00 filing fee. Both require annual filing (we can E-file) with the IRS. The main difference involves whether we are eligible for state sales tax exemption and tax relief for donors (tax write offs for donations).
It was agreed that the first thing that needs to take place however is to, re-instate our TIN number. The next item that needs completing is the re-visions to the constitution. These items are needed when submitting a request for 501c status.
Following the discussion, Gene KB9KXF made a motion to apply for a 501c3 status, Tim N7TAL second the motion. By unanimous vote, the motion carried.
Travis made a motion that if needed and at the direction of the Board, ManCoRad may seek Professional advice to help fill out and file all the necessary forms. Gene KB9KXF second the motion and by unanimous vote, the motion carried. A big Thank You to Dan N9NCU and Steve K9ZW for all of the hard work and time they have put into gathering all of the information needed so the Club could make an informed decision. If you have additional questions or comments regarding the process, you can forward them to either Dan N9NCU, Steve K9ZW, or Carl KA9WYK.
> We have had reception problems with our repeaters lately. Apparently, the 146.610 repeater antenna took a lightening strike and is now shot. As all tower services are contracted through the County, the County is handling this issue. It shouldn’t be long before we are back up to full strength.
> The sale of the TS – 830 Radio has been proposed for the asking price of $350.00. There have been no offers as of yet, the club will entertain other offers. If you are interested or would like more information, contact Carl KA9WYK.
> To help with the cost of the 180 restoration, John NZ9Z mentioned that there was a matched pair of 6146w tubes for sale at a reasonable price. There was a motion to purchase 2-6146w tubes by Travis KB9YRC and second by Tim N7TAL. The motion carried. After further discussion, Fred W6BSF agreed to make a list of what tubes are needed. There may be a person with a shoe box full of tubes that would meet our needs. This option will be pursued first.
> Carl KA9WYK has sent out the changes to the roster via email. Members were asked to make corrections to their information and return the corrections to Carl KA9WYK so they could be posted as soon as possible. For those members who do not have access to a computer, a hard copy will be sent. Please make any corrections and mail them to Carl KA9WYK at:

> The open house held on Saturday 10:30 – 12:30 had a low turn out. This is a great opportunity if you are interested in learning more about the different ways to HAM it up. If you are interested in a particular topic, feel free to bring it up at a meeting or contact another ManCoRad member for more information.
► New Business: ManCoRad has a tower site proposal from Mark WB9WRT. This site is located at Two Rivers and could support some areas that are not reached with our current system and could be a used as a back up to the 61 repeater. The antenna will be at or around 230 feet. There are also two lengths of coax. Mark WB9WRT is asking that ManCoRad pay for the cost of the electricity to operate it. Steve K9ZW made a motion to pursue this tower site offer. Vern K9EME second the motion; the motion was carried by unanimous vote. Marty KC9JGE and Carl KA9WYK will check the cost of electric with a meter. There will be a follow up report as information is collected.
> Fred W6BSF continues to work on the Lakeshore phase master restoration project. If you have knowledge of phase masters, or if you have a desire to help with this project, feel free to contact Fred W6BSF.
► Committees: Our last Brat Fry is scheduled August 30th, 2008 at the Two Rivers Pick And Save. Set up will be at 8:30 am and we will be selling brats and hamburgers until 2:00 or 3:00pm. We still need people to help run this Brat Fry. These fry outs are used as the main fundraisers for ManCoRad. Contact Marty KC9JGE if you are able to help out any part of Saturday, August 30th.
> Carl KA9WYK will appoint a couple of members to the election committee. If you are interested in running for office or in getting involved with a committee, please contact Carl KA9WYK or one of the committee members. There will also be nominations from the floor on election night. *Update* The election committee members are:
- Carl KA9WYK -
- Rich KC9LOA
Tim N7TAL
> A HAM Cram is being planned for this fall. It will most likely be held in October or November. There will also be a VE Team present for those members that would like to upgrade to general or higher. Contact Steve K9ZW for more details about HAM Cram or if you are interested in Elmering.
► Rich KC9LOA will give a presentation from Field Day at our next meeting.
