April, 2007 Meeting Minutes

President Carl ( KA9WYK ) called the meeting to order at 7:33 P.M.
The April 2007 meeting minutes as e-mailed & posted on web site was accepted by motion from Jerry ( KC9JNL ).
and second by Theresa (KB9KXE ).
Dan ( N9NCU ) gave the treasury report with a motion to accept from Dick ( N9QFY ) second by Bob ( KC9HBA ).
President Carl ( KA9WYK ) announced that we have a number of new membership applications for club membership,
Roxanne Kahan ( KC9KQU ) motion to accept Roxanne into club was from Gene (WB9DQD ) and Second by John
(NZ9Z ) and Lois Demmin ( KC9LFT ) motion to accept Lois into club was from Gene (WB9DQD ) and Second by Steve ( K9ZW ).
A Big Welcome to both Roxanne ( KC9KXQ ) and Lois ( KC9LFT ) as new members of the ManCoRad club.
Club Roster will be up-dated after the Ham Cram and then posted and emailed.
Sign up sheet’s were passed around for the Brat Fry’s on May 5th and May 19th ( 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM ) both day’s.
As well as for the Cobia Event on April 27th, 28th, and 29th – Remember anyone wishing to join this event should contact John ( NZ9Z ) to get on board free of charge. On Saturday night we will be having a Scout Troop sleep over.
On Saturday’s Cobia Event, we will be having a celebrity – Donald Michalski ( W9IXG ) The ARRL section manager.
Let’s show Don a great time and take a lot of digital pictures – We have a good chance to get into QST with this event.
Travis ( KB9YRC ) gave a Field day report – that the committee met and will be trying to make things a little bit different and more interesting this year. Walt (K9WL) and Bob (KB9INK) are working on a loop antenna for field day.
Gene ( KB9KXF ) and Theresa ( KB9KXE ) will be bringing their trailer again this year.
Barney ( N9XER ) still needs to be contacted for the use of his tent.
This years June 23rd and 24th Field day will also have Winlink 2000, PSK31, and a HF station in the Tent, along with putting the R7 on top of the tower.
Walt ( K9WL ) and Bob ( KB9INK ) showed members a base for the post - built by Bob ( KB9INK ) for the Loop.
Ham Cram report was given by Steve ( K9ZW ) – there are 6 candidates taking the testing, 1 or 2 of those that may be taking more than just the technician’s test. - 2 members planning on taking an upgrade, and someone coming in for an administrative upgrade. The class will be downstairs from the club because of a person in a wheelchair.
This is a closed session - so anyone wishing to take an upgrade should contact John ( NZ9Z ).
April 21st Ham Cram will start at 8:00 AM and break at 11:30 for Lunch and testing will be approximately 3:30 PM.
At the Ham Cram a Welcome flyer with club applications will be handed out.
On the Clubs web site, there is a club application that can be downloaded from the Welcome page.
President Carl ( KA9WYK ) reminded members of the Manitowoc County Health Dept requirements for the free food safety course, regarding our Brat Fry’s.
Those wishing to participate in this course can get all the information from the March meeting minutes.
President Carl ( KA9WYK ) read a statement. Regarding both Steve ( K9ZW ) and himself - Carl ( KA9WYK )
- Steve ( K9ZW ) has coordinated a first time activation registration for a number of Wisconsin Island’s under the
- US Island program. The activations will be on HF - both sideband and PSK.
- Carl ( KA9WYK ) will be co-activating some of the Islands on a limited basis. Because some of these Islands only can be accessed by boat, space is limited so maybe an additional member can be included.
- Club members can help make the 25 QSO’s per Islands, initial contact possible by contacting them via HF / PSK.
- The Islands in Manitowoc County are: Manitowoc Island, Pig Farm Island, Hobo Island and Step-in Island.
- Hopefully this will be done early next month and an announcement of this will be made to the member of when this
will be done. After these Island’s are completed they will be working with the Ontario Club to be officially
released.
Steve ( K9ZW ) is asking to use the Cushcraft vertical antenna for this expedition, a vote was taken and motion was
accepted by Dick ( N9QFY ) second by Bob ( KC9HBA ).
President Carl ( KA9WYK ) talked about some members inquiring about another Club Special Events / Contest.
In addition to Field Day, such as the US. Counties QSO party, North American QSO Party, North American Sprint, and the CQ World Wide DX contest. Steve ( K9ZW ) agreed to coordinate events as well as another W9DK-60 special event in December to close out the 60th anniversary to use up our clubs special event QSL cards.
Steve ( K9ZW ) announced some of these dates -

North American QSO Party is: August 18th and 19th Steve ( K9ZW )
North American Side Band Sprint: September 16th
CQ World Wide DX contest is: October 27th and 28th
A request from the Sagbraw Bike Tour for operators to help with their Bike event on Wednesday August 1st.
There will be a link for this event on our site and anyone interested can contact them through this site.
Remember that we have two other Bike events

- Leukemia Bike Tour July 21st and 22nd
Dan ( N9NCU ) gave the ARES/RACES report.
- * The ARES/RACES radio station was installed at Holy Family Hospital on April 2nd. Located on the lowest
- level of the hospital at the incident command center.
- * The second quarter ARES/RACES training will be on May 12 starting at 9:00 AM at the Hospital and then
- back to the club shack.
- * A lower section of the cabinet in the club shack has been installed and help will be needed to install the top
- sections. There is a drawing of the proposed remodeling and anyone with comments should address them now.
- * Scholten grant fund balance.
- * Last opportunity for the ICS and NIMS training will be Monday April 23 and the county office
- complex on expo drive.
- * Last week was tornado awareness week and a mock exercise; we activated a net and ran into a snag
- "that we had a weak signal between Red Cross HQ and the Appleton repeater which is used by Green Bay
- NWS for Skywarn. This is a new weakness in addition to a previously known weakness of no contact ability
- between Red Cross HQ and the Calumet Co. ARES/ RACES repeater in Chilton."
- We will look into what will have to be done to correct this problem.
- QSL cards were purchased - Fred (W6BSF) noticed a minor defect in the cards and an additional 150 were made free of charge.
- President Carl (KA9WYK) said that a soldering gun and soldering iron were purchased with the Scholten grant fund, A request was made for the club to reimburse ARES/RACE because these are items that any member can use.
Steve ( K9ZW ) made a motion that the club should take an inventory of the tools on hand then set a $300 amt. limit to to purchase tools without continuous motions to do so.
A vote was taken and a motion accepted by Steve ( K9ZW ) and seconded by John ( NZ9Z )
Fred ( W6BSF ) and John ( NZ9Z ) volunteered to take inventory of club tools.
Steve ( K9ZW ) announced the following:
- * Looking for someone that is computer ‘Sava’ on logging to help in event logging, since our computer software
- isn’t set up yet to run. Contact Steve.
- * Clark Cooper ( K8BP ) e-mailed Steve ( K9WZ ) regarding a 5 band antenna also works well QRP up to 400
- watts. Clark is sending Steve a CD of step by step pictures of how to build it.
- Steve will be building a few in July for himself and anyone interested in doing a fun build together should
- contact Steve.
- * Washington Island ( WIOO1L) is willing to set up a camping trip for those interested in using the ( WI9DX )
- and the ( W9EVT ) shack’s. George ( WI9DX ) had a hard winter with Antennas and an afternoon with a few
- hams will really help him out. Steve will be going up in July & August for a week each but anyone interested
- in going up in June should contact Steve.
- * Steve also suggested that we obtain a list of area operator’s mailing list and send off our club brochure that
- Marty ( KC9JGE ) prepared for the club, inviting them to join our club.
- President Carl ( KA9WYK ) said that we can download the list and go through them, and then decide who to
- send to.
John ( NZ9Z ) brought to the attention that we have some new – Old equipment made in Manitowoc from the 1970’s donated by John Jagemann from the Court House Pub.
Carl ( KA9WYK ) suggested setting up a vintage station in the club shack.
Carl ( KA9WYK ) talked about our Field Day / Family picnic combination – where members can bring a pot luck dish and the club will supply the meat and other essentials. “Trying for a bigger get together.”
Fred (W6BSF) showed the members a club jacket for sale through “Lakeshore Screen Printing” in Manitowoc.
This light weight Jacket will have Club Logo – Your Name and Call sign.
Outer jacket is a satin like Royal Blue color with a light lining. Logo / Lettering in a golden yellow color.

The ManCoRad Monthly meeting will be held on May 9th at 7:30 PM. in P114 the EOC training room at Lakeshore Technical College in the Public Safety Training Building, the featured presentation will be by Travis ( KC9YRC ) Who will be putting on another Severe Weather presentation.
The monthly 50/50 raffle was conducted and the winner was Bob ( KC9HBA )
The treasury increased by $ 3.75 and Bob donated his winning to the lunch fund.
A Yaesu hat raffle was also conducted – the winners were:

Jerry ( KC9JNL ) also won a TV rabbit ear antenna - this antenna is the ManCoRad’s version of a "wideband
directional VHF antenna" Hi Hi
The motion to adjourn meeting was by Marty ( KC9JGE ) and second by Travis ( KC9YRC ) at 8:50 p.m.
Social luncheon followed adjournment.
After the luncheon Carl ( KA9WYK ) presented a video on the activities of the Northern California DX foundation.
