MANCORAD
August 9, 2006, Mancorad Meeting Minutes
President Fred (W6BSF) called the meeting to order at 7:37 p.m. The Treasurer’s report was given by Dick (N9QFY), and was accepted by motion from Travis (KB9YRC), and second by Theresa (KB9KXE). The July, 2006, meeting minutes as e-mail distributed by Fred were accepted by motion from Walt (K9WL) and second by Gene (KB9KXF).
Signup sheets were routed for the following events (please contact the named individuals to volunteer);
- Brat Fry Fund Raiser on August 19, Pick’N Save in Two Rivers (N9FVZ, KB9KXE, KB9GOY or NZ9Z)
- Mancorad Family Picnic on September 16, Neshotah Park in Two Rivers (N9FVZ or KA9WYK)
- USS Cobia outing on September 23-24 (W6BSF, K9WL or KA9WYK)
Dan (N9NCU) gave the following ARES/ RACES update:
- The 3rd Quarter ARES/ RACES meeting was held on July 18; a Red Cross orientation for Red Cross volunteers.
- 5 Skywarn severe weather net activations in July.
- Status of OJA Emergency Communications Grant spending; ~ $11, 000 expended, and $15,300 allowed. Grant expires end of September, 2006.
- Holy Family Memorial has resolved the concern about the 146.805 repeater receive site at the Western Avenue Hospital rooftop and the incoming ARES radio station; Kewaunee County EM has been invited to either stay, or relocate their receive site to the Reed Avenue HFM tower site.
- The 2006 Wisconsin ARES Simulated Emergency Test will be conducted on October 7; the scenario will be a bio-terrorism event.
- Dan thanked those who have participated in work parties upgrading grounding and antenna coaxial cables.
- Travis (KA9WYK) led a discussion of proposed club shack operating station remodeling as forwarded to the membership by Fred. Suggestions for consideration received from the members present were:
- Consider a UPS for the operating station (WA9EXS)
- Consider 18” high vs. 14” high upper cabinets (K9WL)
- Put the “work area” in between the operating stations (K9WL) – members present indicated their preference to leave the “work area” at the west wall end of the station lineup
- Purchase a legal limit linear amplifier rather than a 500W or 600W unit (KB9INK)
- Make the operating station modules mobile, similar to W9LTC (K9ZW)
- Add under counter lights at the radios (W6BSF)
- Buy a new backup repeater antenna rather than use the old 146.610 removed Hustler G7 vertical (WA9EXS)
The club members in attendance unanimously supported the proposed remodeling changes.
Contact either W6BSF or NZ9Z if you plan on attending a dinner on August 18th (5:30 p.m.) with Victor, 4S7VK at the China Buffet on Calumet Avenue in Manitowoc.
Steve (K9ZW) has proposed a 2 day special event celebrating Mancorad’s 60th anniversary on December 9 – 10, operating from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. from the club shack. A brat fry associated with the event was proposed during the meeting.
Fred led a discussion about the historical collection of literature (old handbooks, issues of QST, CQ, Badger Smoke Signals, etc.) regarding membership interest in maintaining the collection. It was proposed that the old issues of BSS could be sent to recycling, but old handbooks and CQ and QST issues could be kept at this time, with selective sorting.
John reported the Clancy, K9WIX, has recently returned home from serious surgery and seems to be doing well. Dick will look into sending a fruit basket to his home. This led to a general discussion that all of the membership is requested to notify either the club President or Treasurer if they learn of a significant event involving a member’s hospitalization or loss of family member so that the club can acknowledge the event in an appropriate and timely fashion.
An auction of surplus Mancorad equipment was held at the end of the meeting (see attached list). Total proceeds to the club treasury received came to $515.00. Three high ticket value items were not bid on by those present and will be sold through a source such as eBay. Results of these later sales will be reported to the membership.
The monthly 50/50 raffle was conducted. $12.00 was collected, and the winner of the drawing was Fred, again (he also won at the July meeting). The treasury will increase by $6.00 from this raffle, and Fred’s pocket did too.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:35 p.m. Fellowship and socializing followed.
Respectfully submitted,
Dan (N9NCU) Secretary
